ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY REVIEW : THE EYES

IS THIS YOUR EYE ???
THE ANATOMY OF THE EYE
OVERVIEW

The visual system are 'distance' senses, bring information about our environment to our perception. The system detects the intensity and quality of stimuli, encode and process this information and transmit it to various areas of the cerebral cortex. The senses provide much of the avaiable information about environment.

The visual apparatus is speciallized to detect light. Light passes through the cornea, aquous humour, lens, and vitrous humour before striking the retina. The visual reseptor-rods and cones-encode data about the intensity and wave length of light. This information is processed and transmitted through the nerve cells of the retina, optic nerve and the thalamus before arriving at the visual cortex. The information is constructed in the primary and associated visual cortex into a concious perception.
